Blackened Salmon with Tomato Salsa

Enjoy the healthy benefits of salmon and a jolt of  flavor at the same time. When you are searching for a healthy, light summer meal that will not take long to make, salmon is one of your best options. It can be cooked in less than ten minutes, and the high levels of protein and omega-3s that the fish provides are hard to beat.

A variety of spices are used to make this blackened salmon. Paprika and cayenne are the prominent spices, which help achieve the blackened effect. The end result might bring a little heat so if you are not a fan of spicy foods, you might want to tone it down a bit. After the spices get rubbed into the salmon fillets, the fish should marinate in the refrigerator for at least an hour, or up to overnight.

After the salmon is done marinating, all that is left to do is to throw it on the grill. If you feel that grilling fish can be tricky (since it has a tendency to flake and fall apart) pan-searing the fish would also be fine. Always err on the side of undercooking the fish, because once it is overcooked there is no going back. Salmon only takes about 8-10 minutes to cook, and then it is ready for the table.

Ingredients
  1. 2 6-oz. salmon filets, skin-on
  2. 1-2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  3. For the rub
  4. 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  5. 1/4 tsp cayenne
  6. 1/4 tsp chili powder
  7. 1/4 tsp salt
  8. 1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper
  9. 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  10. 1/4 tsp onion powder
  11. Pinch of dried oregano
  12. Pinch of red pepper flakes
  13. For the salsa
  14. 1 avocado, pitted and thinly sliced
  15. 4-5 Roma tomatoes, thinly sliced
  16. 2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
  17. 2 tsp lime juice
  18. Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
  1. Mix together all of the ingredients for the dry rub. Rub the olive oil into the fish, and then rub the spices into the salmon. Place in the refrigerator to marinate for at least one hour, or overnight.
  2. Meanwhile, stir together all of the ingredients for the salsa. Set aside.
  3. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Grill the fish, skin side up, for 3 minutes. Carefully flip and cook for an additional 3-5 minutes or until opaque throughout. Top with salsa and serve immediately.

  1. Per Serving
  2. 1 ripe banana
  3. 1/4 cup almond or coconut milk
  4. 2 tablespoons of Chia seeds
  5. (optional) dash of cinamon
Instructions
  1. First mix in a blender the banana and almond milk until smooth (approximately 30-seconds)
  2. Add the Chia seeds and "pulse" a few times to achieve an even mix
  3. Pour into a dessert serving bowl and chill for about an hour
  4. Sprinkle on cinamon and watch how quickly it gets devoured!

What a bunch of Coconuts..pancakes (video)

Nothing quite like starting the day with the aroma of fresh brewed coffee and the sizzling sound of pancakes being grilled.  Now who doesn’t love starting their Saturday or Sunday (why not both) with a short stack of hot pancakes drizzled with maple syrup? Even if you’re gluten-free or grain-free, you can still enjoy this Paleo-friendly version of the traditional breakfast treat.

Coconut Flour Pancakes

Yield: 2 to 4 servings
Active Time:

Ingredients

1/4 cup coconut flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 pinch salt
3 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
1 tablespoon raw honey
3 large eggs, at room temperature
1/3 cup almond milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Zest of 1 orange
Zest of 1 lemon
Coconut oil for frying pancakes
Maple syrup, to serve

Instructions

In a large bowl, whisk together the coconut flour, baking powder, and salt.In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the coconut oil, honey, eggs, almond milk, vanilla extract, and orange and lemon zests. Pour this mixture into the flour mixture and fold to combine, breaking up any large lumps in the batter.

Heat a tablespoon or so of coconut oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Pour small 1/4 cupfuls into the skillet and cook until the bottom has turned golden brown, 2 minutes. Flip and cook until browned on other side. Continue cooking until all batter has been used, adding more coconut oil to the skillet as needed. Serve warm with maple syrup or coconut nectar.

This isn’t Mom’s Cauliflower.. Ice Cream! (video)

Just when you think you have heard and tried everything along comes a new twist on America’s favorite treat ice cream…Cauliflower Ice Cream!! Yes, I did say cauliflower and get this, it’s delicious!  C’mon for real?  Oh yes…it doesn’t taste like cauliflower at all as your palate will experience some coconut and vanilla flavoring. Cauliflower Ice Cream
An amazingly new twist on Ice Cream...made from Cauliflower!

Ingredients
  1. ½ head cauliflower (about 1½ cups florets) – You can also use 1½ cups of frozen riced cauliflower
  2. 1 cup cashews, soaked and drained –place them in water and and soak for at least 1 hours.
  3. 1 cup coconut milk
  4. ¼ cup organic coconut oil
  5. ½ cup organic maple syrup
  6. 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  7. 1 tablespoon almond extract
  8. ⅛ teaspoon sea salt
  9. ½ cup pistachios, chopped
Instructions
  1. Cut the cauliflower into florets. Boil for 5 minutes, or until tender. Drain and cool.
  2. Add the cooked cauliflower, cashews, coconut milk, coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla extract, almond extract, and salt into a blender and process until smooth.
  3. Poured the blended mixture from the blender directly to a glass loaf bakeware.
  4. Stir in the pistachios before storing the ice cream in the freezer.
  5. Freeze for at least 4- hours and take out of freezer approximately 30- minutes before serving. Sprinkle with pistachio and enjoy cold!

7 Reasons to Love Garlic—You Will Be Shocked at #7!

Garlic—it’s been around forever,  and quite frankly, kind of taken for granted. We know it’s good for us, but it has a bad reputation for giving everyone stinky breath, so many avoid it. Whether you love  garlic or avoid it like the plague, it is the heart of many cuisines all over the world, and many dishes would actually taste quite strange without it. But, besides its unique taste, garlic has amazing medicinal qualities that support your health—and your lovelife!

Garlic’s pungent odor and sharp taste comes from the sulfur-containing compounds, primarily a substance called allicin. Allicin is known for its antibacterial, antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties and is a  powerful component of garlic! Allicin has to be ‘activated’ in garlic in order to have the strongest effect. In fact, allicin is produced only when the garlic clove is crushed or chopped—a long-standing defense mechanism of the plant. Once you crush or mince the garlic, it has to sit for a minute, as the enzymes activate the powerful phytochemicals in the garlic and produce the allicin.

Let’s take a look at some of the amazing ways that garlic can improve your health:

1. Garlic is a Natural Antibiotic

Antibiotic resistance is becoming a serious worldwide concern, as the overuse of antibiotics in large scale meat production has created a whole new group of antibiotic-resistant super bacteria. This makes even minor bacterial infections in humans a serious health issue, if there are no medical antibiotics that can kill the bacteria. Garlic has been shown in scientific studies to kill a variety of common and dangerous bacteria including: campylobacter jejuni (responsible for food poisoning, pseudomonas aeruginoasa (pneumonia, and urinary infections), E.coli (food poisoning) staphylococcus aureus, klebsiella pneumonia (pneumonia, meningitis), shigella sonnei (diarrhea, dysentery), salmonella typhi (typhoid fever), as well as helicobacter pylori responsible for stomach ulcers and cancer.

One scientist wrote, “Crude garlic extract…was superior to that of all conventional antibiotics used, except streptomycin… garlic may also possess immune-stimulatory effects in addition to its antibacterial effect.”

Vancomycin is currently one of the powerful last-resort antibiotic medications that has dozens of serious side effects. However, even vancomycin now cannot kill some resistant strains of enterococcal bacteria (VRE). Garlic has been shown to have inhibitory effects on this superbug as well as anthrax, a killer bacterium.

While there are still some remaining conventional antibiotics that work on superbugs, they kill all beneficial bacteria as well as the harmful bacteria. As we now know, beneficial bacteria are extremely important to our physical, emotional and mental health, and killing them with powerful antibiotics actually weakens our immune systems. Fortunately, garlic knows the difference between good bacteria and bad bacteria, and–better yet, garlic contains prebiotic oligosaccharides, which are non-digestible carbohydrates that feed our healthy bacteria.

2. Kills Candida Safely

Candida albicans is a fungus that can live in the digestive tract. Usually our beneficial bacteria can keep it under control, but candida is an opportunistic fungal infection that thrives off of glucose and starchy foods. If our diet is off, or our immune system compromised by allergies or other illnesses, it can grow out of control. For many women, this can be a problem, as candida can become an uncomfortable vaginal infection as well. For many people, candida can be chronic and cause brain fog, allergies, digestive issues, bloating, weight gain and more. Prescription anti-fungals are available, but they are harsh to our systems and hard on the liver. Garlic can’t be beat! Research shows Allicin is as good as, or more effective than common pharmaceuticals to suppress growth and kill off excess candida.

3. Stabilizes Blood Sugar

Obesity and diabetes have become an overwhelming epidemic worldwide. Refined sugars in most all of our food supply, coupled with sugary soft drinks and fruit drinks have created havoc in our bodies with chronically high blood sugar, weight gain, heart disease, infections, kidney and eye disease and more. Raw garlic has actually been shown to modulate blood sugar, reduce the damage it has on our bodies, and reverse the inflammation and oxidative stress. Garlic improves insulin sensitivity so that blood sugar stays in check better.

4. Prevents Heart Disease and Blood Clots

Many physicians still prescribe dangerous statins to reduce cholesterol, unfortunately, statins have had some pretty awful side effects like increasing your chances of getting type 2 diabetes, liver damage, cancer, neurodegeneration, and weakening your muscles (including your heart). If you can take a natural approach to lowering your LDL cholesterol, you should be way better off. LDL numbers can improve with a combination of lower carb/low sugar diet, exercise and garlic. Garlic can regulate cholesterol, lower blood pressure, lower inflammation levels, and prevent arterial plaque buildup, and help prevent heart disease.

One of the biggest contributing factors to heart disease is blood clots. Blood clots move along arteries until there is a narrow spot, and then get stuck, blocking off blood flow and oxygen—this creates either a heart attack, or stroke.  Certain people, based on a variety of factors, including diet, are more likely to have blood clots, but garlic helps to thin the blood in a healthy way. Aspirin has been recommended by the medical establishment as a preventative measure against blood clots, but has recently been rescinded by the Food and Drug Administration. When it comes to anticoagulants, allicin from garlic tops the list.

Another risk factor in heart attacks and strokes is high blood pressure. Often the drugs used to control blood pressure have many adverse side effects, including impotency, making them undesirable. In the Journal of Pharmaceutical Science, study results showed garlic to work better than atenolol, a popular beta-blocker hypertension medication.

5. Prevents Lung Cancer

Garlic breath may be tough to tolerate, but that is one of the ways it supports your lung tissue. The powerful compounds in garlic are very valuable for lung health. This study showed that eating raw garlic twice a week or more, reduces the risk of lung cancer by a whopping 44% ! Allicin also helps ease congestion and irritation in the lungs and helps fight pneumonia.

6. Supports Healthy Pancreas and Insulin Production

Our pancreas helps to produce insulin, which in turn lowers blood sugar. However, in light of the sugar and carb-heavy diets that most people eat today, the pancreas is working overtime to produce insulin in high enough amounts to counteract glucose levels. Over time, the pancrease can become exhausted and quit functioning properly or producing insulin. This is diabetes. Allicin from garlic actually helps to repair the pancreas and allow it to better produce necessary insulin. It works for type 1 as well as type 2 diabetes.

7. Garlic Attracts Women!

While scientists have observed that many animals are more attracted to males who eat a high nutrient, high antioxidant diet—for example blue footed boobys (a bird in the Galapagos) attract mates by thebright blue of their feet—which comes from the antioxidants in their diet. A similar thing may be true in humans, although we don’t look for blue feet, we look for scents and skin colors.  In a series of experiments published in 2016 in Appetite, 42 men snacked on raw garlic or swallowed garlic capsules, then wore cotton pads under their armpits for 12 hours. The pungent samples were later evaluated by 14 women, who collectively rated the body odor of garlic eaters as more pleasant, attractive and masculine compared with that of men who did not ingest any garlic. Because garlic enhances levels of antioxidants in the body and kills harmful bacteria, it could change the way our sweat smells, signaling healthiness to potential mates, the researchers hypothesize. So, while garlic breath on the first date may not score you points, apparently garlic-enhanced body odor will! Garlic is not the only food that might boost a man’s sex appeal. Previous studies have found that carotenoid-induced golden-colored skin is more attractive to potential partners—at least among Caucasians.

Bottom Line

Many, pharmaceuticals are based on naturally-occurring substances—the laboratory tries to imitate nature, but concentrates and isolates active ingredients so that when synthesized into a medicine, they have side effects—in many cases dangerous side effects.

Rather than popping a synthetic version of a natural product, it makes sense to use the natural substance in its whole form. Your body is better able to use the beneficial ingredients, along with all the other natural substances, and use them to actually heal and promote wellness.

Paleo has gone to the dogs….and cats!

Pets and the Paleo Lifestyle

The consequences of the modern lifestyle are largely the same in pets as in humans. Domestic animals are increasingly overweight and inactive, and cats and dogs are even developing diabetes in ever-increasing numbers. This isn’t just a problem for the pets – their owners are also missing out on all the joy of a healthy companion. Domestic animals are a great complement to a Paleo lifestyle, because they help improve your mood, reduce stress, and even work more physical activity into your day.
Affording Paleo Pet Food
Unfortunately, good pet food, like good people food, is also significantly more expensive than processed junk, so a Paleo diet for your pet can come with a bit of sticker shock. Buying an entirely meat-based diet for a large dog can cost almost as much as buying food for another person, and for some people, it might not be in the budget at all. But even if Fluffy isn’t eating the finest grass-fed liver off a silver platter, you don’t necessarily have to stay with whatever you can find at Wal-Mart. Any step away from the grain-based commercial pet foods will be a bonus for your pet, whether it’s moving to a grain-free brand from the supermarket, an even more Paleo brand sourced from grass-fed cows, or an all-meat diet. Some people also compromise by supplementing Paleo-friendly pet food with occasional raw meat and bones.You can also keep the cost down by stocking up on cheap cuts of meat when they go on sale. Since your pet will be eating the meat raw, it’s fine to include bones (cooked bones are brittle and dangerous, but raw bones aren’t, and they’re a great source of calcium), so turkey or chicken necks and backs make great budget-friendly pet meals. Try a variety of meats, including fish, raw eggs, and organ meats.

Healthy Pets

Exercise

Along with feeding your pet the best diet that you can reasonably afford, it’s best to provide plenty of species-appropriate exercise options. Dogs love to run around with their pack – many larger dogs will happily jog with you or even run alongside a bike. Throw a ball around in the park, enjoy some dog-on-human tug of war, or see how long it takes you to destroy a Frisbee. This is not only physically healthy for your pet, but also great for resolving behavior and obedience issues. Just like people, dogs aren’t designed to lie around the house all day without a break: they’ll be less stressed and happier if you take them outside to play.

If dogs are famous for their sociability, cats are known for exactly the opposite attitude: not even the most luxurious Paleo diet will make most cats want to catch a tennis ball, much less come out with you for a jog (although there are always exceptions!). But that doesn’t mean they don’t need regular physical activity in their lives. Toys that encourage the cat to move and jump around are great ways to stretch your cat’s muscles, and safe places to jump and climb (like well-balanced scratching posts) can also help keep kitty occupied while you’re away.

The upshot is that if you have the resources to support a pet, animal friends are a great source of support and companionship, and fit naturally into a Paleo lifestyle. It’s best to feed your pet its natural evolutionary diet (which will vary, depending on the type of pet), but if you have to compromise with commercial kibbles, or a mix or kibble and raw food, there’s no reason to beat yourself up over it. After all, most humans don’t eat 100% cheat-free Paleo, and we still see the benefits of following evolutionary principles, so do what you can within your time and budget constraints, and enjoy the companionship of a healthier, happier pet.

More Evidence Coffee Is Really Good For You

Research published Tuesday in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine found an association between coffee and good health. The results from both studies suggest that the more coffee you drink, the lower your risk of dying from illnesses like heart disease. The benefits were the same for both decaf and caffeinated coffee.

In one study, researchers examined data from 185,000 people across multiple populations, including African Americans, Japanese Americans, Native Hawaiians, Latinos and whites, over a 16-year period. Researchers looked at individuals’ coffee consumption patterns through a questionnaire as well as their health data, like whether they smoked or had an illness.

The study concluded that greater consumption of coffee was linked to a lower risk for death in all population groups, except for Native Hawaiians, which showed no notable difference. People who drank two to four cups per day had an 18 percent lower risk of dying from diseases like heart disease, stroke and cancer than those who didn’t consume the beverage.

The other study, unrelated to the first, examined 520,000 people in 10 European countries, also over a 16-year period. The researchers found that coffee consumption lowered the risk for mortality, especially from digestive and circulatory diseases. This effect was observed across each country and didn’t vary by location.

There are some slight caveats with all of this. The first study defined a cup of coffee as eight ounces, but didn’t account for the type of coffee or what was in it. So, it isn’t clear if additives like cream and sugar, or the variety of beans, make a difference. (Doctoring your drinks can rack up calories, which isn’t so great for your health, so it’s best to beware.) Also, the research didn’t examine how much caffeine was in the coffee the individuals drank.

Despite the positive outcome of these studies, you shouldn’t be guzzling down cold brew in hopes that it will be a magical, life-extending elixir. The researchers noted that it’s premature to recommend drinking coffee as a way to prevent illness or increase your longevity, Today reported.

More research needs to be done in order to definitively determine whether coffee can fight disease. It’s also a good idea to practice good lifestyle behaviors, like eating a healthy diet, controlling stress and exercising in order to boost your well-being.

Still, the new studies add to previous research that shows coffee may reduce stress, boost liver health and keep your brain sharp. So, if you like your coffee, may as well keep up the habit.

How and when did you first start eating organic food?

I’ve always been fairly conscious of the foods I eat, having children deepened my commitment to a completely organic lifestyle. As a mom, I want to give my kids the purest, highest quality food possible. Organic and even Biodynamic make this possible.

Before you launched Foodstirs, what did you feel was missing in the marketplace? What was the moment when you knew you had a viable idea?

There were no accessibly priced mixes that offered convenience, from-scratch taste, and made from the purest, most conscious ingredients available.  Hence, we created Foodstirs to solve this problem that parents and anyone who is into clean baking had.

Many people may have the perception that as a busy actress, you are simply the face of the brand. However, that is absolutely not the case.

I came aboard with the intent of doing more than being the company spokesperson. I have a set of accountabilities that are the same as any other co-founder of a food company. As the chief brand officer, the main areas I focus on are anything related to the marketing, communications, and design of the brand.

A typical day has me planning our partnership promotions, social media content, and innovating recipes with our in-house chef for selling online or at retail. Plus, as a co-founder, I am involved in every aspect of the business, including our many retail sales presentations and fundraising efforts.
